Executive functions are cognitive processes responsible for planning, organization, self-control and goal-directed actions and are located in the frontal lobe. This mental "executive level" enables us to handle complex tasks and effectively control our actions. In neuropsychology, dysexecutive syndrome is associated with an impairment of these executive functions. This syndrome can manifest itself through difficulties in directing attention, problems with impulse control and challenges in planning and implementing tasks. Dysexecutive symptoms are often found in various neuropsychiatric diseases (eg ADHD), in traumatic brain injuries (eg stroke, head trauma) and in neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's).
