The preoperational stage according to Jean Piaget, which occurs between about three and six years of age, is characterized by the emergence of symbolic thinking. Children can use symbols such as words or pictures, but have difficulty with operations, resulting in a centered perspective. Children tend to focus on one aspect of a situation and have difficulty considering different points of view. Inconservation is another characteristic in which children cannot consider the amount of a substance conservatively, even when the appearance changes. Despite these limitations, this stage lays the foundation for the development of language and symbolic understanding.
