Did you know...
...that there are six universal basic emotions?
The six universal basic emotions - joy, sadness, anger, fear, disgust and surprise - were identified by the groundbreaking studies of psychologist Paul Ekman. He showed people from different cultures - even those with little contact with the Western world - photographs of faces displaying different emotions and asked them to name them. He then had people from those cultures take photographs while they were reacting emotionally and showed the pictures to other groups to see if they identified the emotions correctly. The results confirmed that the six " basic emotions " are expressed and understood in the same way regardless of culture. Meanwhile, more recent studies show that there can be up to 34,000 different emotions, which arise from different nuances, combinations and intensities.
