Did you know...

...that Erik Erikson identified eight stages of life in his theory of psychosocial development?

Erik Erikson was a German-American developmental psychologist and is best known for his theory of psychosocial development. This theory emphasizes that personal identity is not only genetically predetermined, but is also shaped by social and cultural influences. Each of the eight life stages in Erikson's model includes a specific crisis or challenge that promotes individual growth and maturation processes:

  1. 1. Trust vs. mistrust (infancy)
  2. 2. Autonomy vs. shame and doubt (early childhood)
  3. 3. Initiative vs. Guilt (Play Age)
  4. 4. Diligence vs. feeling of inferiority (school age)
  5. 5. Identity vs. role diffusion (adolescence)
  6. 6. Intimacy vs. Isolation (early adulthood)
  7. 7. Generativity vs. Stagnation (middle adulthood)
  8. 8. Integrity vs. Despair (late adulthood)

Erikson emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and the ability to adapt, arguing that the development of a stable identity is a continuous process. He died in 1994, but his theories have had a lasting impact on developmental psychology and remain relevant to understanding human development across the lifespan.
